Sockeye salmon, also known as the "red salmon", are one of the most well known of the seven pacific salmon species. It is historically the most sought after and highly valued species due to its high nutritional oil content, superior flavour, and its firm red flesh. This elevated quality is thought to be a result of their diet, which consists mainly of krill.

Pink Salmon

Pink salmon is the smallest and most abundant of the pacific salmon species. Its flesh is light in colour and delicately flavoured. Due to the ample quantities of this species, it is by far the most reasonably priced and readily available.

That is why Raincoast Trading catches salmon in their natural environment using species - specific, selective harvesting techniques.

As a result of different salmon stocks passing through the same fishing areas, non - targeted species may be harvested along with the targeted species. Unlike traditional netting practices, which retain all species harvested, selective fishing techniques require that non - targeted species and weaker stocks are returned back to their environment unharmed. This is accomplished through employing selective fishing gear and methods to sort through the harvest as it is being pulled on board, allowing non - targeted species to be placed in a holding tank, and released safely. We have been using these techniques for over ten years, and the results are starting to show. The numbers of non-targeted species, which are now being released safely, have been significantly increasing.
